Machines have the power to become the ultimate interactive art-making tool. Computers are becoming postmodern blenders bringing together images, sound, and interactive, nonlinear space.

The idea of Paper House was that the pieces were digitally created. It exists only in binary form. There is no analog input to the creation. This collection reflects that.
Aire and Aire2:
I wrote this long ago on an Ensoniq ESQ1 with a Yamaha FB-01 MIDI box and an Alesis HR-16 drum machine (probably in the late 80’s).

Years later, I dumped it to MIDI and it has sat on whatever PC I used for music since then. So yeah, it’s old, but it still feels fresh to me.
I didn’t have the same capabilities back then, so it has been visited from time to time, where I revoiced it, and worked on the mix. But it’s high time for it to be heard. I hope you have as much fun listening to it as I have had writing and listening to the finished product.
Aire2 came as a reprise since it has the same roots of melody, but went in a different direction. I couldn’t integrate with the original, but couldn’t part with this little ditty.
Brrrng:

I found some great bell sounds and it inspired me to put this together. Bells have such great overtones that just a single ring can be powerful and exciting. I tried to keep this simple and let the bells speak.
Disconnected:

After the third straight monthly meeting in my software group, as the department manager spoke of the same stuff he had spoken of in the previous two meetings, I got distracted by a doodle I started on. After the meeting, my team lead came to me and said that the department manager was concerned that I looked “disconnected.”
So I wrote him a song (that he never got to hear).
This song does have a voiceover, so it breaks the rule of “no analog sources.” It’s a small infraction, so I let myself off under my own recognizance.
Stranger in a Strange Land:
Electronica attempt to express the vibe of feeling out of place.

“If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.” โ C.S. Lewis
Flight Jacket:

โFlying might not be all smooth sailing, but the fun of it is worth the price.โ
Amelia Earhart

Trying to catch a vibe of the excitement of flight and the vibe of the aviator.
Geo:

Written for a friend, but then it evolved a bit.
Funk Ride:
A bouncy groove with a few synth leads.
I wrote this when I first started with the Reason sequencer. There were lots of new toys to play with and this came out of that.
Digital Age:

An attempt to convey the feeling I get about the age we’re in, where so much of life is in the digital realm, and so temporal. Many now don’t know any other experience, and it’s been interesting to see how some have gone retro, embracing vinyl albums, and pen and paper. The lack of physical objects and the opportunity of digital media, apps, and the waves of information that flow through them is overwhelming, and inviting at the same time.
You can enjoy this album all of Hyperspectral’s instrumental music on the YouTube channel by the same name.
